Phoenix, AZ – July 5, 20254 – Urban Farming Education is proud to announce that our film "Growing Together" has been honored with a Silver Telly Award in the Social Impact category. This prestigious award recognizes excellence in video and television across all screens, highlighting the power of our film to inspire and effect meaningful change.
"Growing Together" is a poignant and compelling documentary of images that reveals the transformative impact of Latina girls and their parents engaging in gardening and project-based learning. The film showcases how gardening fosters connections and promotes discover moments. It features an original score produced and played by Daniel Mateo of Argentina.
“We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition from the Telly Awards,” said Kim Rillero, Program Director at Urban Farming Education. “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our National Science Foundation grant team, and our focus on inspiring Latina girls to pursue STEM careers. It underscores the importance of social impact initiatives and the role of storytelling in driving positive change.”
The Telly Awards, now in their 45th year, honor the best work created within television and across video, for all screens. With over 12,000 entries from all 50 states and 5 continents, this year's competition was particularly fierce. The Silver Telly is a significant accolade, representing a high level of achievement in the industry.
The images for “Growing Together” were taken in the Avondale Elementary District by Lorenzo Cuevas and Peter Rillero, Ph.D. Kim Rillero led the implementation of the program with Peter and Kim developing the curriculum. Margarita Jimenez Silva, Ed.D. of UC Davis was a collaborator and did the narration. Lorenzo Cuevas produced the film. The film has already made waves sparking important conversations about social responsibility and garden-based learning, such as those at the Hawaii International Conference on Education.
